Crossing Borders is a "live" two hour concert series/ radio broadcast, dedicated to presenting a diverse culture of quality music including: but not limited to, world music, jazz, and original styles. Top performing international, national and local artists are featured in alternating series, and are often brought together on stage and on-air for a spontaneous, isolated experience, defining the nature of Crossing Borders.
Crossing Borders sits under the non-profit umbrella of the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County. The series is broadcast live on Saturdays from 8 until 10 pm from the Lost Dog Lounge across from the Ithaca Commons on Cayuga Street, downtown Ithaca, NY.
Our First Anniversary Was June 18th 2005
Crossing Borders was launched in February of 2004 with a special multi-cultural series of programs recorded live, and began airing "live" for simultaneous broadcast on June 19th, 2004. Special Series presented in the first year included: Local Legend Series, Global Jazz Series, Middle Eastern/Eastern European Series, and the 21rst Century Singer Songwriter Series.
Music from India, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, West Africa, Eastern Europe, Armenia, Ireland, Brazil, Cuba, the Ukraine, France, Mali, and Italy was featured, as was stellar jazz by Steve Brown, John Stetch, Jerome Harris, Joel Rubin, Kneebody, Wingnut,the East Hill Classic Jazz Duo, and Ithaca's own Djug Django, among others. California bands Rock Me Pony and the Northstar Session, and New York based Cabaret artists Cassis, and Felice Rosser, traveled across states to air on Crossing Borders. International artists such as Shoghaken Armenian Folk Ensemble and Yair Dalal traveled oceans and continents.
Crossing Borders is also dedicated to putting the spotlight on the best new or original artists and songwriters, and in its first year featured the Moles, Jennie Stearns, The Burns Sisters, Steve Gollnick, Crow Greenspun, Richie Stearns, Jake Roberts, Nate Richardson, Mary Lorson, the Katherine Aelias Band, Miche Fambro, Paso Fino, Matt Keating, Water Bear, Oculus, Kevin Kinsella, and Alycia Evelyn.
Collaborations continue to be the soul of the concert series and in the first year have been made with the Cornell Council of the Arts and Music Department, the Ithaca World Arts Alliance, and the Ithaca Festival. And of course, the core collaboration of WVBR, the entire Crossing Borders team, and Ithaca's Lost Dog Lounge.
