Oh boy!! How can I possibly thank the folks that contributed along the way, either through their pockets, their valuable time, their advise and research, etc.? I am going to start at the beginning..... Our pilot team of dreamers: Aron Birkland at WVBR, Larry Helmeczy, Hank Roberts and Mark Chandler in my sun room with one phrase of inspiration - "imagine this..." - and they all imagined enough to research (especially Larry) and talk and not laugh at me! Then Peg Hendricks and the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, Marty Hatch and the Martin Hatch Foundation, Phil Shapiro and the Friends for Bound for Glory and later, for the Youth Series, enter Maryanne and Brian Pitzer and the Brent Pitzer Memorial Foundation. All of this, plus partnerships in that first season - with Aron Gutman and the Cornell University Music Department, Ithaca Festival.These energies drove us and then..... enter our fabulous youth tech team headed up by Sam Mason and later Mark Hewitt. In subsequent seasons they were joined and overlapped by Arlo Fierman, Will Donovan, and finally Ross hathaway and Brendan Hammond. And of course, our web site came into being by the wonderful David Botsch who still manages it, and creates posters as needed. The Crossroads Lifecenter offered administrative help and Miche Fambro joined the production and hosting team. Also Maria Mallon helped craft the offical Crossing Borders intro. During those overlapping first few seasons, we also gained Ray Ackerman on sound and recording when Larry moved to New Zealand. (Fortunately he came back in time for our expanding needs for a growing tech staff). And Al Grunwell III began recording back up and alternating with Ray. He eventually launched our video program; hence you can view vedeo clips of our shows on YouTube as well as on our site and Finger Lakes Recording (Al's site). Nate Silas Richardson jumped in with a whole season series of African influenced original and African artists. And partnering workshops with Ithaca Guitar Works. A large helping hand came from Kiko and the Cornell Concert Series,the Cornell Folk Dance Ensemble and Aron Gutman, for very special presentations. Audience services were ably handled by Pamela Slack and Joyce Garzon and sometimes a young Savan DeSouza. Then came our first major move to Club Euphoria downtown. An advisory committee formed of Diana Dmitrova, Matt Falise, Alan Rose, Durga Bhor, Aron Gutman, Brent Martin, Patricia Longaker. Marketing by Matt Falise, posters and production contributions by Brent Martin and Richie Stearns, technical help by Terry Kellerher of Bound for Glory staff. Chairs from Women's Community Building. New help from Heather Dunbar, Patricia Haines, Patricia Longaker, Marty Hatch, Paul Merrill, various Cornell student associations. New relationships in 2006 and 2007 with McNeils Music of Ithaca, Cornell Institute for European Studies, Community Arts Partnership Decentralization program, and Hickeys Music. Then moving again and partnering with Community School for Music and Arts, Musicians for World Harmony and Samite Mulondo, City of Ithaca, Cornell Asia programs, WICB's Sonic Planet, Ithaca Festival, Cornell Institue for European Studies, Cornell Jazz Ensemble, and McNeils Music of Ithaca. Also, Pancho Villa Club, Nicky Wood and Marty Marts,Moonlight Dancer, Aron Gutman, Brent Martin, Grassroots Festival, continuing support from Maria Mallon, CAP and Brent Pitzer Memorial Fdn. We'd also like to thank the Federal House, Tompkins County Tourism Board, Kurt Lichtmann, and and all raffle donors for the First Annual Cinco de Mayo Community Celebration we hosted. In 2008 many of these same folks continued to support the show with their time and talents. New help came in the form of the Lost Dog Management, facilitated by SueAnne Elizabeth and Mike Estrich, Daniel Hayes, Ray Ackerman and the Center for the Arts of Homer (a new partnership), Luke Kaven and Smalls Records, Carriage House Hayloft, Community Heritage Grant, Traditional Crossroads Record lable (for the third time),and the Ithaca Festival. Additional sponsors for specific events and series included the Cornell Music Department (for Charles Davis),August Moon Spa at La Tourelle (for Sacha Perry and Felipe Salles), Peggy Haine Realtor, John Beach, Kaplan Piano Service,McNeils Music,Carriage House Hayloft for Sacha Perry, MacIntyre's Cottage, Helens Cottage, and Smalls Records for Sacha Perry. Thank you Paula Peter and Mike Ward for accommodating Bertha Hope. Our main sponsor,The Coddington Guest House, underwrote and/or accommodated many of the past four years of artists including Pablo Menendez,Shoghaken Armenian Folk Ensemble,Jerome Harris, Marty Ehrlich, Cassis, Yuri Yunaokov, Trakia Bulgarian Wedding Band,Charles Davis, 35th Parallel, Bertha Hope,17 Hippies, Cafe Antarsia Ensemble, Mike Brown Trio, Miche Fambro Quartet - just to name a few. The Future of Crossing Borders (General)
Well, it has been four long years of incredible work for a weekly live show of quality!! The staff of Crossing Borders is proud and devoted of what we have accomplished and VERY excited to move forward to another level of work. The only way to change is to improve and the best way to improve is to make time for the things we don't currently have time for. The solution is that we are finally letting go of the "weekly" commitment and moving into a "monthly plus" commitment - that will mean a regular monthly series plus extra supplemental shows as they come up and a separate global series. Here is how it will work: Beginning in February, the Crossing Borders Live Ithaca series will begin at the Lost Dog Lounge on Saturday nights, as we have been, only just one time monthly. This series will highlight a cross-over of the best of area artists- in collaboration, blending styles, genres, or combining forces with visiting artists. A GREAT example of the type of show we will focus on is what took place last night with the Sim Redmond, Hank Roberts, Nate Silas Richardson Reunion Show- a product of a previous Crossing Borders event in 2005, producing new projects in live music. Watch for more of this in 2009. Additionally there will be a specific Crossing Borders Global Series, featuring world music and world fusion, that takes place at the Hayloft at 304 Stewart Avenue. This series begins in early spring 2009 on misc.Friday evenings. All of these will be streamed live in various ways and many of them will be podcast. Stay tuned for more details as they develop right here on crossingborderslive.org. The benefit of all this change? More time for fewer projects = more quality and promotion. We have done the quantity thing, as well as quality. Now we go beyond so we can market the magic of this project and product and truly promote the thriving live music scene of our unique community via Independent media and multiple traditional media sources. We have a great product to share with Crossing Borders as a resource. The reason for this is our quality sound. Our crew is incredible and Crossing Borders exists because of them: Larry Helmeczy, Ray Ackerman, and Al Grunwell III. Our devoted volunteer staff is as crucial as anything else: David Botsch, with gorgeous posters and constant web management, continues to be our lifeline. Various people have helped out over time and I will thank them all shortly. But our current heros include the regularity of technical staff Brendan Hammond and Ross Hathaway, and audience services by Patricia Longaker and Heather Dunbar. We are SO grateful to the live audiences who have made our broadcasts possible and who support live music, and to the journalists who have acknowledged our value in the community- particularly Jim Catalano. Because of all of you and this community we have decided to sustain the show by going further with it; improve and promote Crossing Borders so that it will sustain itself and in turn continue to help sustain the live music industry. Please wish us luck and most importantly, please support the performances.... By attending, by sponsoring, by volunteering, by passing the word - in whatever way you can participate! Welcome to our fall line-up!! (General)
I am so excited about this fall on the show! First of all, we are bringing back two beloved ex-Ithacans - Walter Strauss and Miche Fambro. If you miss them, well, I will feel sorry for you!
Walter is here this week (Sept 6) with his wonderful open sound and his group, Tensleep.
Listening to his music makes me want to jump in a car and drive across country - it's that feel good, motivating sort of a sound track in your head that fills you up inside! The last time he was here, people came up to me in the audience and said "the only thing I hate about Ithaca is that Walter doesn't live here anymore!" So, with that in mind, I hope you'll come get your Walter Strauss fix this Saturday. After all, it's been three years since he was here!
And Miche Fambro has not appeared in Ithaca since he moved several years ago! He arrives with his full band for an exclusive show. A unique artist, a unique person. Ithaca has suffered his absence. I cannot wait!
Between these stellar artists arrive some slightly or very famous ones: Scotland's Dougie MacLean at Homer on the 13th- we will air that one live instead of being at the Lost Dog. And then we present a hot new act out of New York -Stacey Rock - on the 20th. I so loved the Cd, I lobbied for this. A surprise for Ithaca.
Come in and sit back, grab a beverage and put up your feet in the intimate setting at the Lost Dog Lounge for some of the best musical experiences you can get anywhere in the world! It's our songwriter series all of September. Check the press releases for detailed information on the artists.

I don't actually pitch the Passports too much days, since I try to avoid the show sounding like a commercial. But those in the know realize that it is the best deal in town; contributing to live music and the continuation of grassroots treasures like Crossing Borders, while receiving a value well beyond the the face price. (Your money goes directly to subsidize artists. Just ask one of our Passports holders who are treated to a new musical feast every Saturday night if they think their check was worth it!
